LOANS OFFERED

By 1995, the level of UDB activities had increased significantly reflecting increased demand for medium and long term credit, initially for rehabilitation and later for expansion and modernisation of the country's productive enterprises and infrastructure. Between 1981 and 1994, UDB funded a total of 691 loans worth US$ 151m to various sectors of the economy throughout the country.

SECTORAL ANALYSIS

The Sector-wise analysis of UDB's loan portfolio is given in the following paragraphs. As will be seen from the following table, among the broad sector categorisations, industry took the lion's share of the bank's portfolio, at 75%. Agriculture comprised only 15% by comparison. This analysis is in terms of total loans outstanding comprising principal and interest.

The above table compares the regional distribution of UDB's loans (total owing) to the weight of the regions as measured by their respective populations. In the table, it can be seen that with the exception of Kampala which had 4.6% of Uganda's total population but received 34.15% of UDB's total portfolio, the other 4 regions had a high positive correlation between the weight in national population and the proportion of UDB's loans invested in the regions. This reflects that regionally, the bank's lending operations were fairly evenly spread. It is however important to note that such fairly even distribution of its loans had a serious drag on the bank's managerial and logistical infrastructure.
