GAP - Graduate Apprenticeship Program

The Graduate Apprenticeship Program (GAP) is a flagship initiative of the Bank designed to provide hands-on skills development and job opportunities to young professionals in Uganda. The program supports the Bank’s commitment to creating a strong talent pipeline while contributing to national priorities on youth employment and human capital development.

The inaugural program was launched in 2020 and recorded remarkable success, with a 100% retention rate and outstanding on-the-job performance ratings for all four trainees in the first cohort. The group included graduates in Engineering and Environmental Science, who were selected through a rigorous merit-based process from a large pool of applicants.

Over a 12-month period, the trainees underwent intensive rotational training across all Bank departments and operations, complemented by professional courses and certification programs in areas such as Development Finance and Project Finance. This holistic approach ensured that participants gained both practical exposure and specialized technical expertise.

GAP is one of the Bank’s responses to nurturing human capital in Uganda. It is designed to create sustainable, decent, and meaningful jobs for budding professionals, while aligning with the government’s development agenda as outlined in Vision 2040 and the Third National Development Plan (NDPIII).

Through initiatives like GAP, the Bank continues to build a pool of highly skilled development finance professionals equipped to contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.

Joining the Bank in the first cohort of the Graduate Apprentice Program was a lifetime opportunity to boost my career. It was a great experience working with highly experienced professionals who give a hands-on training in the development banking operations. The training offers a wholistic approach to learning the system of development banking through the rotational program throughout the bank’s departments. The staff are very open minded and very willing to share their knowledge. The training gave me the opportunity to apply my theoretical knowledge practically in addition to bridging the knowledge gap needed to accomplish real life tasks. The specialized mentoring in Environmental and Social aspects and personal development programs have built in me a wealth of knowledge, confidence, and expertise to assess Environmental and Social risks. With the knowledge base, personal development programs and hands on training, the UDB apprentice program is the epitome of learning.

The Graduate Apprenticeship Program at UDB from 2020 to 2021 was a steppingstone to my professional and personal development. Through the structured on-the-job training, mentorship and continuous professional development sessions, the staff generously shared their knowledge and experience. I was nurtured and empowered to actively engage in the bank activities. The Bank also challenged me to creatively think, engineer and transform ideas into bankable projects for socio-economic development as well as innovate sustainable financial interventions. I am enthusiastic to continue working with the Bank towards improving the lives of Ugandans.

The Graduate Apprenticeship Program at Uganda Development Bank is an excellent opportunity to learn and grow, and at the same time demonstrate competences. As a Graduate Trainee at the Bank, I have got the opportunity to work on transformational projects as well as interacting with highly knowledgeable, committed, and welcoming colleagues across the organization. From the outlook of the Program, I have been exposed to numerous functions and initiatives of the Bank. For instance, I have been able to participate in project origination activities where I have managed to write and present project papers, managed to keep a right track of clients’ conditions in the conditions tracker, as well as participating in report writing among other so many exciting activities throughout the Program. I can say I have been empowered with high level responsibilities and tasked to fulfill the Bank’s mandate in supporting the socio-economic development in the country especially under the current attachment in Investments. In general, the Graduate Apprenticeship Program was the ideal entry point to prepare me for my career development especially in development finance and beyond.

Joining the Uganda Development Bank Apprenticeship program provided me with the opportunity to augment my passions with a resounding mission. Through all-round exposure to the Bank’s operations, I was able to work on exciting projects, particularly in Infrastructure. I was fascinated by the organizational culture which nurtures teamwork, learning & growth, innovativeness, and integrity. The Bank’s multisectoral nature and diversity presents a vast pool of opportunities for Graduates from all backgrounds.
